چکیده

In the last five years several synthetic aperture radar (SAR) images of hurricanes have been acquired by the Canadian satellite RADARSAT-1 as well as the European satellite ENVISAT. Several of these SAR images have captured hurricanes of category 4 and 5. These SAR data give the unique opportunity to investigate the possibilities of SAR data for observation and forecast of hurricanes. In this study wind fields under hurricane conditions are retrieved from the SAR utilizing WiSAR. WiSAR is an algorithm, which has shown to give good results under low and moderate wind conditions. The algorithm extracts wind directions from wind induced streaks imaged by the SAR at scales above 200m. Wind speeds are extracted from the SAR measured normalized radar cross section (NRCS) utilizing the C-band model CMOD5, which describes the dependency of the NRCS on wind. It will be shown that the algorithm enables to measure wind directions as well as wind speeds of over 50 ms−1. The SARretrieved wind fields are compared to results of a high resolution numerical hurricane model.

The Object Detection Efficiency in Synthetic Aperture Radar Systems

The main purpose of this paper is to develop the method of characteristic functions for calculating the detection characteristics in the case of the object surrounded by rough surfaces. This method is to be implemented in synthetic aperture radar (SAR) systems using optimal resolution algorithms. By applying the specified technique, the expressions have been obtained for the false alarm and cor...

Application of Displacement Map Produced by Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Technique in Height Datum Determination in the Subsidence Area

Damages due to subsidence such as destruction of watering system and agricultural fertile soil, wells increasing, damage to the roads, bridges and high ways and disordering in the water and gas supplying usually are irreparable and costly. As a huge amount bench marks of height network of Iran are placed in the subsidence area, changing their heights is a challenge for NCC. In this study, a new...

Investigations on extreme sea states and hurricanes using Synthetic Aperture Radar data

Within the last 20 years at least 200 super carriers have been lost due to severe weather conditions. In many cases the cause of the accidents is believed to be 'rogue waves', which are individual waves of exceptional wave height or abnormal shape. In situ measurements of extreme waves are scarce and most observations are reported by ship masters after the encounter. A normal Atlantic hurricane...

A Review of the Three-dimensional Field Displacement Retrieval Methods Using Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar Observations (InSAR) With Emphasis on the Precision of Each of these Methods

Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (InSAR) technology provides a useful tool for quantitatively measuring the deformation of the earth, influenced by natural factors (earthquake, subsidence, and landslide) and human factors (construction of structures, drilling, and the overexploitation of underground water aquifers). In this context, time-series analysis of radar images allows the monito...

Speckle Reduction in Synthetic Aperture Radar Images in Wavelet Domain Using Laplace Distribution

Speckle is a granular noise-like phenomenon which appears in Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) images due to coherent properties of SAR systems. The presence of speckle complicates both human and automatic analysis of SAR images. As a result, speckle reduction is an important preprocessing step for many SAR remote sensing applications. Speckle reduction can be made through multi-looking during the...
